Fulbright-Kalam Climate Fellowship
- In order to address the climate change issues in India and the US, the two countries have launched the Fulbright-Kalam Climate Fellowship, an initiative to advance bilateral cooperation on climate change.
- According to newspaper reports, the first call for applicants was announced for the fellowship jointly funded by both the governments and will enable up to six Indian PhD students and post-doctoral researchers to work with US host institutions for a period of 6-12 months.
- The fellowship has been named after the late Indian President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam and is part of a commitment made by the US President Barack Obama and Prime.
- The selected candidates will have affiliation with one U.S. host institution during the grant.

Fellowship Details
- Fulbright-Kalam Climate Fellowships are offered for:
Doctoral Research
- These fellowships are designed for Indian scholars, who are registered for PhD in an Indian institution.
- These fellowships are for six to nine months.
Postdoctoral Research
- These fellowships are designed for Indian faculty and researchers, who are in an early stages of their research career.
- Postdoctoral fellows will have access to some of the finest resources in their area of interest and will help build long-term collaborative relationships with U.S. faculty and institutions.
- These fellowships are for eight to twelve months.

Grant Benefits
- These fellowships provide round-trip economy class air tickets between India and the U.S., a monthly stipend, accident and sickness program for exchanges as per the U.S. Govt. guidelines, a modest settling-in allowance, and a professional allowance.
- In case of postdoctoral research grantees, and subject to availability of funds, a dependent allowance and international travel may be provided for one accompanying eligible dependent provided the dependent is with the grantee in the U.S. for at least 80 per cent of the grant period.

Eligibility Criteria for Fulbright Kalam Climate Fellowship 2023
For Doctoral Research
- Applicants registered for their Ph.D. should have conducted adequate research in the relevant field, especially in the identification of resources in India and the U.S. Applicant must be registered for a Ph.D. at an Indian institution on or before November 2, 2020
- For example, if May 2023 is the grant end date, the applicant cannot submit his/her thesis before August 2023. Please indicate the Ph.D. registration date and the expected Ph.D. thesis submission date in the Applicant Annexure. The applicant can download the Applicant Annexure from the USIEF website;
For Postdoctoral Research
- Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree within the past four years. She/he must have obtained a Ph.D. degree between July 15, 2017 and September 14, 2023. The applicants are required to upload his/her Ph.D. or DM degree certificate/provisional Ph.D. or DM certificate on the online application;
- Applicants must have a publication in reputed journals and demonstrate evidence of superior academic and professional achievement. S/he must upload a recent significant publication (copy of paper/article) on the online application (not exceeding 30 pages); and
- If an applicant is employed, please follow the instructions carefully regarding the employer’s endorsement. If applicable, obtain the endorsement from the appropriate administrative authority on the Letter of Support from Home Institution. The employer must indicate that leave will be granted for the fellowship period.
